Description

Many people believe that Mission furniture is heavy in appearance, but that was earlier work. As the period developed, many of the pieces became lighter with a move toward an appreciation of proportions. The desk we’ve selected has all the Mission qualities, including straight lines, mortise-and-tenoned assembled sides and back and a side-hung drawer. Plus, the additional storage compartments do not diminish the overall size of the writing surface.

Discover how to easily produce quadrilinear legs, and why side-hung drawers are a hallmark of Mission furniture. Understand the proportions brought to furniture of this style and learn the proper technique to create mortise-and-tenon joinery. Plus, we’ll discuss how to finish your project for an authentic period look.

Materials are not included in the class fee. Lumber for this project may be purchased through 360 Woodworking, or you can bring your lumber with you to class.

Attendees are responsible for safety glasses and hearing protection, combination or machinist square, bench chisels, mallet, dovetail saw, marking gauge and tape measure or folding rule, if you have them. If you do not have the tools on the list, don’t panic. We have plenty of tools for your use in class.
