Is Machine Sanding Enough? – 360w360 E.149

widebeltIn this episode of 360 with 360WoodWorking, the 360 guys talk about whether stationary sanders can be used for the final surface on the parts of your projects.

Join the guys twice each week for six lively minutes of discussion on everything from tools to techniques to wood selection (and more). Chuck & Glen, and sometimes a surprise guest, all have their own opinions. Sometimes they agree and sometimes they don’t, but the conversation is always information packed and lots of fun.

  1. So, how well does the oscillating drum sander compare to the random orbit sander? Any thoughts?

    1. Charles,

Even if the drum oscillates you still get sanding lines – they’re just wavy instead of straight. The great thing about a random orbit is, there is no discernible pattern to the scratches (or at least far less of one). For me, the whole point of prepping a project for finish is to come away with a uniform, scratch-free surface over the entire exterior of the piece. It’s the only way dyes and stains will take evenly over the whole project.
