  1. It would be comforting to side step the decision and let a RULE take the heat. But then everything would start to look alike – what’s the fun in that. After all if the Shakers hade followed the Golden Law we would never have the Tall Cupboard. Despite what “they” would have you believe humans are not repulsed by asymmetric design.
    If we exclude studio furniture then Form must follow Function. It will do no good to build a lovely wine cabinet two inches shorter then a bottle of wine.
    There is an area of design (that I struggle with) were rules are important Bob touched on it – the structure of things (engineering). For instance. How wide should a table stretcher be? The lower limit is my leg but how short can I getaway with? What shape? How thick? What other structure could be substituted? These are considerations seldom addressed and difficult to resolve based on one photo.
