Build A Chippendale Small Chest

by Glen Huey 24 Lessons in $12.95 $9.95

One of the best choices you can make to advance your woodworking skills is to build a case piece, such as this Chippendale small chest of drawers. When taking this online course, it's as if you're at the bench with Glen D. Huey as he explains and demonstrates the woodworking techniques he uses to construct this chest from start to finish. You learn how to hand cut dovetails for case construction, how to join drawer blades to a case, traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery, how to make drawers using hand-cut, through and half-blind dovetails and how to produce shop-made moldings. Glen also tosses in a few techniques to help speed your work without sacrificing the traditional appearance on the completed project. Plus, you learn the exact step-by-step finishing process used to highlight figured grain. It's sure to make all of your woodworking projects stand out. Build an Inlaid Tea Caddy with Glen Huey

by Glen Huey 19 Lessons in $12.95 $9.95

This course is far more than simply building a tea caddy, which by itself would be an interesting project. It kicks off with five complete lessons that focus extensively on making the various inlay pieces. All of the fans are sand shaded to create a depth in the design. (You discover how to setup your tablesaw to produce the thin pieces necessary.) Corner pieces are laid up from sticks (often made from scraps) before being cut in specific ways to produce the visual effects. Plus, you get step-by-step instructions to make bandings – once you know the process, you can assemble a myriad of bandings using the same techniques. It's only then that you begin making your tea caddy. Included in the instructions are tips to produce box parts off the saw that are ready to assemble with corner notches already in place. And while your first thought may be that the lid for this project is a solid piece cut and shaped to design, it's really a series of layers – three in all – in which pieces are milled, shaped and mitered before being assembled, during which you learn how to get the most from your cove router bit. When it comes to finishing your tea caddy, I doubt you'll find an easier or better process to use. A combination of oil and shellac build a deep finish with each layer's application being fully explained. Best of all, these coats are ragged on your caddy. The overall course is broken into six categories, and 17 lesson with and introduction and plans section. The individual lessons each include a short video and a written list of the steps demonstrated in the lesson. This project is small – no hauling large parts all around your shop – yet the woodworking information packed into the course is huge.

Carve a Scallop Shell with Chuck Bender

by Chuck Bender 16 Lessons in $12.95

Master furniture maker Chuck Bender teaches you step-by-step how to knock out a simple scallop shell as you develop and use the skills necessary to carve almost anything. This course divides the process into individual steps, walking you through layout and concave and convex lobes as you work with a short list of carving tools that won't blow-up your tool allowances for the year. At the completion of the course you'll be able to add flare to any furniture project by incorporating carved elements. Move your carving skills to new sculptural highs.
